Marine Buddy Challenge

All exercises demonstrated by

Marine Sergeants Hetrick (blonde “high & tight” haircut)

and Allen (dark “high & tight” haircut)

Marine Sit-ups

Figure 1.  Team’s starting position.   Hetrick’s arms are crossed and placed firmly against chest, knees bent and feet flat. Allen is sitting on Hetrick’s feet, firmly wrapping his arms around Hetrick’s legs and holding them in a tight bear hug

Figure 2. Up position:  Hetrick in a full crunch, arms still crossed tightly against his chest.  Crossed arms must touch legs without losing contact with the chest!  From the starting position to up, and all the way back down to the ground counts as one sit-up.  Failure to correctly execute any part of this exercise will result in no credit for the sequence.  Both team members must count the number of sit-ups out loud for the judge to hear and verify.

Marine Buddy Push-ups

Figure 3. Team’s starting position:  Hetrick, standing straight, holds Allen’s legs up.  Allen’s chest is barely off the ground and his hands are about shoulder-width apart.

Figure 4. Up Position.  Allen’s arms are fully extended, but  Hetrick’s position does not change.  From the down position to up, and back, counts as one complete push-up.  Both team members keep count out loud so the judge can hear and verify number.

Marine POWs with packs.

Figure 5. Starting position:  Knees on the ground, body erect, arms holding pack overhead.

Figure 6. Up position:  Arms fully extended.  From pack held overhead, to arms fully extended and return to starting position counts as one POW.  Team members count out loud and complete the repetition together.  If team members do not stay in unison, the sequence will not count.  (Good news:  We won’t make you kneel on concrete; they guys are just particularly tough.)

Marine Buddy Carry (aka Fireman’s Carry)

Figure 7. Hetrick carries Allen in the correct Buddy Carry posture.

Figure 8. Step 1 - Hetrick demonstrates the appropriate way to begin the buddy carry by placing his right hand behind Allen’s right knee.  Hetrick is bending at the knees and also places his left hand on his knee to support both his and Allen’s weight.  Allen’s knees are slightly bent as well.

Figure 9. Step 2 – Hetrick uses his left hand to grabs Allen’s right arm while leaning in to Allen’s mid-section.  Allen begins to place his left hand at the base of Hetrick’s lower back.

Figure 10. Step 3 – Marines lean in toward one other as Allen prepares to hop up on to Hetrick’s shoulders.

Figure 11. Step 4 – Allen hops up as Hetrick lifts with both legs.

Figure 12. Notice that Allen’s left hand is on Hetrick’s lower back.
